Teboza looks to the south for asparagus cultivation to lengthen season

Will Teeuwen: "Focus is on organic at our new Dutch plots"

The 2018 asparagus year will not be remembered as a top year. Production in Southern, Central, and Northern Europe happened at almost the same time this year. Unfortunately, we were late on the market with our Spanish production. This showed that we need to look to the south for cultivation, in Northern or Southern Africa, for example. We want to be able to offer a year-round supply. We want to have an alternative to the Peruvian product ", Will Teeuwen of the Dutch company, Teboza, says.
"With asparagus, it can not always be an uphill struggle like this year." For us, it is now a case of seeing what we can gain from this difficult year, "says Will. "This year, the weather was the biggest deal breaker for us. We could not get rid of our large supply in Europe. Asparagus is a typical Spring product. If the weather is hot, people like to barbecue. Asparagus does not go well with this", Will elaborates.

"That is why we are directing more of our focus on other countries. For example, we are already selling a lot of Dutch and Spanish asparagus in Asia. "There, the total consumption of asparagus keeps climbing," says Will. "Green asparagus has settled nicely there. There are also sufficient opportunities on that market for white asparagus."
Teboza has also decided to increasingly focus on cultivating organic asparagus on their new plots in the Netherlands. "We've been growing organic asparagus for ten years now. However, it only makes up 10% of our total acreage. Fortunately, we have mastered organic cultivation. With the additional conversion of our crops, we want to show that we are a serious contender in the area of sustainability," concludes Will.
